2D Background - Tonal Studies

To start off the project I was given the task of doing some quick tonal studies, using animation backgrounds for reference. This is so I can understand how to layout and light my own background. 

I did some tonal studies in class as a warm up for this exercise.

I found backgrounds with less going on to be much easier, as I could map out areas of light and dark, and I could even add some texture. I used charcoal as I could fill in areas of certain tones quickly, and if I wanted I could add texture. I did find it a little difficult to get the mid tones with charcoal, so I swapped to watercolour for a study but I then paid too much attention to detail rather than the tones so I went back to charcoal.
